Thoughts on Service - Tuesday, January 15, 2008

My church recently began a four-week sermon series on service. Our pastor began the series by focusing on what the Bible teaches about the body of Christ, and about our need for one another (I Corinthians 12:12-31). This relates so beautifully to our kindergarten class. As I teach the children about what this means for them as a group, I can also extend their thinking to reach out to others, with a missions focus. We already completed the Mission India "Rice Bag" project to support Children's Bible Clubs in that country. I really want them to understand what it means to serve and meet the needs of others. Because God has made us a diverse group of people with different gifts and abilities, we have the opportunity to further God's Kingdom by being sensitive to the needs of the world. They are not too young to grasp that!

I have invited some members of the 8th grade class to come to my kindergarten class to speak with the children about their upcoming mission trip to Costa Rica. I want them to talk to the children about why they are going, what Costa Rican children experience on a daily basis, and about how we as a class can pray for the 8th graders when they go (the trip is from March 5th - 10th). I think it will be important for my students to learn how we can both serve and depend upon God and one another. 8th graders: we are ready to cover you in prayer!

National Endowment for the Humanities - Thursday, January 10, 2008

On January 4, 2008, Naples Christian Academy received a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) as a part of a program called Picturing America. Picturing America exists to help young people learn our nation's story by introducing them to some of America's greatest masterpieces of painting, sculpture, architecture, photography and decorative arts.

As a part of the grant, the Academy recieved a set of durable reproductions of 40 images featured in the Picturing America initiative as well as resources and information on integrating the images into various subject areas. We look forward to using these images to enhance our curriculum. Thank you so much to Mrs. McWilliams for her work on applying for the grant!

PGA Golf Professional to Instruct at the Academy -

From January 14-25, we are pleased to welcome a PGA certified golf professional who will instruct our students in the game of golf. Students will be taught the basics of the game here at the school during their regular physical education time. Golf is a game in which students can learn concentration, patience and skill. It is also a game that can be enjoyed at each life stage. We are very excited about this opportunity; we would like to thank the PGA for providing us with two weeks of instruction for our students.

Please stay posted for pictures of your students learning the game!

Naples Christian Academy Chess Club -

I am very happy to inform you that the Academy is introducing a chess club for grades 1-8. This new activity that will be run by an outside company specializing in teaching chess to students. All instructors must be approved and have a background check completed. The club will be held on Monday afternoons for 12 weeks from 3:15-4:15 pm in Mr. Davison's room. To sign up, please fill out a registration form at the front office.

I believe very strongly in the value of chess, as it contributes to students' thinking and reasoning skills. Although chess is not necessarily an academic subject or pursuit, the skills that students learn by mastering the game translate seamlessly into the classroom as they develop skills necessary for academic excellence. I strongly encourage our parents to consider this as an activity for their students.

Annual Fund Participation Update -

As of December 31, 2007, I am pleased to announce that 15% of our parents, 20% of our grandparents and 100% of our faculty and staff have participated in the Annual Fund! Our elementary parents have the highest level of participation so far, and we encourage our middle and preschool parents to step up to the challenge and join us in increasing our participation levels.

Proceeds from this year's Annual Fund Drive will go towards teacher training and professional development, technology upgrades and an upcoming mathematics initiative which will include new curriculum and resources for improved student learning in math.

You can help us reach our goal of 50% parent participation by January 20th! Donate what you can today. Any contribution helps us increase our participation level, and 100% of every contribution benefits your child's education at the Academy. To donate please go to Network for Good.

Annual Fund Update - Tuesday, January 8, 2008

The Academy's Annual Fund Drive is an essential part of funding each child's education. Since tuition income covers only about 70% of the actual cost of educating a child at the Academy, we depend upon the support of financial gifts to the Annual Fund. Last year's Annual Fund Drive helped fund increased teacher salaries, teacher training in literacy development and Thinking Maps, and extensive resources and curriculum for reading and writing, including an elementary literacy library. This year, proceeds from our Annual Fund Drive will be supporting a school-wide mathematics initiative and new curriculum, teacher professional development and continuing education, and technology resources including software and new projectors.

Happy New Year! - Monday, January 7, 2008

Happy New Year to the Naples Christian Academy community! As I look back on the year, I am so thankful to God for how He is at work and for what He is doing in and through the Academy. There are so many highlights from 2007, and as I remember all that has happened, I look ahead with eager anticipation at what God will do in the year ahead. 2008 marks the 35th Anniversary of Naples Christian Academy, and we have so much to celebrate!

2007 Highlights:
  • The U.S. Department of Education named Naples Christian Academy a Blue Ribbon School. The Academy is the only Blue Ribbon School in Collier County.
  • The work of expanding the roadway in front of our campus began. To coordinate with this project, we began the process of re-designing the parking areas, driveways, and landscaping in front of the school.
  • We received the largest contribution to date; an annonymous donor contributed $800,000 to the Academy for the purpose of acquiring additional land for future expansion.
  • Kathy Hartley, an 18 year veteran teacher, was named the Preschool Teacher of the Year at the 2007 Apple Blossom Banquet. This Collier County award is give to a pre-primary teacher who has an outstanding impact on student learning.
  • Ben Davison, a 10 year veteran teacher at the Academy, attained National Board Certification, which is the highest professional qualification a teacher can achieve.
  • The first phase of a new playground was completed, much to the delight of our young children. We have raised one third of the $60,000 needed to complete the second phase of this project.
  • The Academy established a literacy library as a resource for its guided reading curriculum and other literacy education supplies.

Thank you so much for partnering with us! May God bless you and your family in the year ahead!

2006-2007 Annual Report -

The Academy recently published its first-ever annual report, designed with the objective of highlighting our previous year's accomplishments and providing our constituents with a general overview of the direction we are headed. I am very excited about this report, and so many people played a role in its publication. Sam (also known as Profe) and Ashley Brockinton captured and edited the beautiful artwork included in the report. Kara Gary, a former employee who recently relocated to Seattle, participated in the writing of the report. Anna Futrell, the Academy's Director of Admissions and Marketing, designed the layout and participated in editing the content.

All parents, grandparents and partners will receive a hard copy of the report within the next two weeks. To view the report electronically, plick click on the following link http://www.napleschristian.net/AnnualReport2006.pdf.

Thanks for reading!

Bill Vecchio - Middle School Chapel -

Today we were blessed to have Bill Vecchio, Student Discipleship Pastor at Summit Church in Estero, speak and lead worship at our middle school chapel. Bill graduated from Palm Beach Atlantic University in 2005 and now works full-time with the middle and high school students at Summit Church. I was very thankful that Bill came to the Academy today, and he spoke such powerful words about how our relationship with God is the most important part of our lives. Not only is he a talented musician, he is also a gifted and passionate speaker and connected with the students in a personal way. I continue to bring in young adults who are passionate about working with students and who are impacting the world for Christ to speak to our students during our weekly chapel time. I think that its vital for our students to catch a vision for how God wants to use them in the not-too-distant future.

Academy E-News -

It has been approximately two months since the Academy began sending out weekly emails highlighting school events, academics, accomplishments and ways in which Academy students are impacting the community. In our digital age of readily-available information and technology, the Academy believes that a paperless means of communication is necessary for our families. Many families have responded positively to these emails. We strongly encourage parents to subcribe to these emails and continue to inform us of their current email addresses. Sign up for our weekly Academy E-Newsletter by emailing Anna Futrell at futrell@ncanaples.com.

We really appreciate parent feedback that we receive. We believe that having a way to systematically review feedback on an annual basis will help us as we evaluate our goals and objectives as a school. Our desire is to continue to pursue excellence in many different areas, and we are committed to growing and strengthening our programs. The survey is 100% annonymous, and was developed in conjuction with a nationwide Association of Christian Schools International survey program. Please take the time to provide us with feedback.
