PreK Hands-On Writing - Thursday, October 23, 2008

I am always so pleased when parents bring me pictures to post to the blog and/or include in the Connection. Below are some pictures of a hands-on writing activity that Mrs. Flom did with her preschool class. The students were provided with shaving cream and asked to write various letters, words and numbers with their fingers. This demonstrates our commitment to developmentally-appropriate activities for our students, particularly in the area of literacy development.

Serving at the Salvation Army Childcare Center - Tuesday, October 21, 2008

Mrs. McWilliams invited me to document the sixth grade's day of service at the Salvation Army Childcare Center. I loved watching our students learn more about what it means to be servants in our community.

Bentley Village -

On Friday, October 17th, Bentley Village invited a group of our sixth graders to play at the grand opening tournament of their golf course and participate in the ribbon cutting ceremony. I was able to attend the ribbon cutting ceremony to take pictures of our students and to represent the Naples Chamber of Commerce Action Committee. What an honor for our students to be included in this event!

An Addition - Friday, October 10, 2008

We've had a few new additions to our school community as it relates to our faculty and staff for the 2008-2009 school year. I've gotten to know Julie "Julieta" Lindsay over the past few months, and her power and expertise in the classroom certainly impress me. Despite her comprehensive knowledge of the Spanish language (including various regional differences and intonations) and her vast experiences traveling the world, I find that one of the more interesting things about Julie is that she attended the Academy as a child.

In His Word, God promises to remain faithful to complete a good work in us. I can see that very clearly in Julie's life. God, in His infinite wisdom and kindness, accomplished a work of redemption and has brought Julie full circle, back to the place where she started (NCA). She has already become an integral part of our school community, both professionally and spiritually. I'm so glad that she's here!

Economic Persepctive -

The recent turmoil of the markets is certainly an interesting phenomenon to behold. Although I am not as financially-savvy as some of my counterparts, the way the markets work still intrigues me. I don't pretend to understand the intricacies of why we had the week we did, what caused it, and who's to blame. All I can say is that God will use whatever means necessary to point our hearts to His sovereignty, and this is what I pray for. It was a week in which people witnessed unthinkable financial losses, and I pray that the experience of brokenness directs people to the Cross- to the only economy that will never let them down: God's systematic redemption of His people.

I have a hard time understanding how people can cope with the mortality and uncertainty of life on earth without the Hope that springs eternal. The Psalmist says in chapter 102:3, "My days vanish like smoke." The Newsboys, in their song "Breakfast," so aptly beg the question, "Those here without the Lord, how do you cope?" (Coincidentally, the song also uses a variety of colorful breakfast food imagery, which I find endlessly amusing!)

The reality of God's economy is that nothing belongs to us; what we think of as our money is actually the Father's. My dad consistenly reminds me that the only safe thing to do with my money is to give it away. As we have seen recently, there is no safe investment except for investing in things of eternal value.

excellent insight sister! I also LOVE the Newsboys' song "Breakfast"!!! "when the toast has burned and all the milk has turned and captain crunch is waving farewell... may this song remind you that they don't serve breakfast in hell"... (i think i missed a few words...) anyway, very good encouragement about finances! :-)
