Kindergarten - 8th Grade Collaborative Art Project
- Friday, January 29, 2010
Mrs. McWilliams, our art teacher at Naples Christian Academy, implemented a collaborative art project in which she and her students created their own replica of Dale Chihuly's "The Persian Ceiling," now on display in the main hallway of our school. The replica is 15 feet long by 3 feet wide. Nearly 200 individual students worked on the project, each creating their own individual "glass bowls" to contribute to the ceiling. Each "glass bowl" is made of clear flexible plastic, and the colors were applied through the use of permanent markers. The design and color of each child's "glass bowl" was chosen by the child; the project involved each student in kindergarten through eighth grade.
Mrs. McWilliams has a thirteen year history of fostering creativity and innovation in student art work at Naples Christian Academy, many of which are shown in local art galleries as well as at The Naples Philharmonic Student Art Show. Last year, Barbara McWilliams was named Florida Elementary School Teacher of the Year by the Association of Christian Schools International.

First Grade Poetry
- Wednesday, January 27, 2010
Today, Mrs. R invited me to her first grade classroom for a poetry reading! Her students had written Valentine's Day poems that they were in the process of publishing in plenty of time for February 14. The poems did not have a length requirement, although they had to include sensory details, alliteration, and repetition. The class had looked at several verses in Scripture that discussed love, which could be included in the students' poems.
The poems were lovely. Each student read their poem aloud to the class -- and to me. I loved the recurring themes of familial love, God's love for His children, and candy!

Spirit Week Begins Tomorrow
- Tuesday, January 26, 2010
All of the faculty and staff at Naples Christian Academy received an email reminder today from Mrs. Barner with the subject field stating: "Spirit in the House!" Her email encouraged us to view this year's Spirit Week from a spiritual perspective, and she called us to pray about spiritual renewal within our school community:
"I ask that you be in prayer for Friday's All School Chapel, and that you discuss it with your students. We use Spirit Week as a time to renew our school spirit, but we also want to remember the importance of a renewal of our spiritual life as a school. If our students come to Friday's chapel with an an attitude of prayer, God will accomplish mighty things!"
The Spirit Week schedule is as follows:
Wednesday: 5th - 8th Grade Crazy Hair Day
Thursday: 5th - 8th Grade Class Color Day
Friday: PreK - 8th Grade Blue & White Day
We will be ending Spirit Week on Friday with a K-8th grade chapel at 1:45 pm which will focus on prayer for Haiti, followed by a Pep Rally in the Gym at 2:15.

Responding to the Aftermath of the Earthquake in Haiti
- Thursday, January 21, 2010
As a school community, we desire to respond with Christ's love and grace to the needs of the world. The news about the devastating earthquake and its aftermath that took place in Haiti last week has brought us to our knees as we mourn and pray for those impacted. God and His people are at work in Haiti, and we would like to encourage our families to continue to pray. We have seen our students respond to the devasation in authentic and heartfelt ways in the classroom. Our students have been burdened to uphold their Haitian brothers and sisters in prayer, to give sacrificially to relief efforts, and to encourage their peers to respond in kind.
If you and your family would like to contribute to relief efforts, please consider contributing to the following organizations/fundraisers. Both organizations presently have staff on the ground in Haiti and are already providing supplies and essential items to the people who have been affected by this terrible earthquake.
In accordance with our school's mission to develop students with hands prepared to serve, in the coming weeks, we anticipate organizing a food drive to collect non-perishables. At this point, many organizations are innundated with food-stuffs. We are receiving information from organizations anticipating a sharp decline in food donations over the next few months. We will seek to organize a school-wide food drive at that time. Additionally, our kindergarten mission, which supports a school and orphanage in Haiti, will be spearheading an effort to provide relief to Haitians impacted by the earthquake. More details will be forthcoming when we receive direction from our partners in Haiti.
I will be sure to keep you up-to-date via the Parent Connection and the Academy's blog.
